Why not come along to the annual North West Mesemb Show, this being the 14th running of the event at our usual Manchester Branch meeting venue.
On Saturday 12 October, Manchester Branch is delighted to be hosting the North West Mesemb Show. With over 40 classes, this is a great opportunity to see this wonderful group of plants, many of which are at their very best at this time of year. There will be a number of prizes available this year including the ‘MSG Award’ of a year’s membership of the Mesemb Study Group for the Best Plant In Show.
There will also be a wide range of plants for sale at reasonable prices from commercial and private sellers, and a good selection of hot and cold refreshments available from the kitchen.
If you want to exhibit but haven’t entered yet, there is still plenty of time. Please request a schedule from the Show Secretary: Peter Bint, 313 Manchester New Road, Alkrington, Middleton, Manchester M24 1NR Tel: 0161 643 8932 Please ensure your completed schedules are received no later than Monday 7 October.
In addition to the show itself, there will be an afternoon lecture given by Andrew Young, entitled “Location, Location, Location.”
Doors open to the public at 10.15am, with the talk starting at 2:00pm. The event will close at 3:45pm.
Mesembs grow in habitat in Southern Africa and are classified under hundreds of genera. Whilst Lithops and Conophytums are the most well known, and most often grown genera, there are are many more suitable to grow in collections in this country. All Mesembs grow by producing opposing pairs of leaves each year and usually (but not always) grow towards the latter end of our summer season.
Whether you are a keen collector of Mesembs or have no idea what they are you will find the day enjoyable and will see many plants not often found in collections. We hope to see you there.
